I decided to be brave and said, "Sarah Palin is awesome!" And they all gave me dirty looks, and I said, jokingly, "See, I can express my opinion and none of y'all hurt me, because I'm nice!" And one of my friends who is extremely caustic towards conservatives in general conversation (again, like everyone at school) said, "Yeah, that's why we're still friends, because you're nice about expressing your opinions."

I didn't say it, but I definitely thought it....why is it that I have to be nice about expressing my opinions, but those who are verbally hateful towards conservatives don't? Okay, so last week I had the shingles. It was not fun. They are going away now, but they still hurt (strangely enough). Who knew there were so many fun new things to experience at college!

Also, I got a lead role in the opera that performs October 24-26. :-O Kind of hard to believe, and I have to keep saying to actually believe that it's true. We start rehearsals a little next week, but full tilt starting the 22nd of September. So five weeks of no life, a show, and then it'll be more than halfway through the semester!

That's just about all that is up with me right now!

First Monday Back

Well, here I am, back in Oklahoma. And I have an apartment this year, and it's so nice!! I have my own room and bathroom, and a decent sized living room and kitchen with just one apartment-mate. It's super nice, and I really love it. It's quiet, but it's a good kind of quiet to come to after a crazy day of classes. Plus I have lots of friends on campus, too, so I can always go visit them. We had auditions for Footloose this evening, and it went decently well. There's no way I'll get a callback, but that's fine, because I don't care too much about that show. :-) Tomorrow evening is theatre auditions, then Wednesday choreography show. I think this coming Monday is opera auditions. Anyway, this is the week we all look forward to, right? Not so much. It's been a while, I guess, but when has it NOT been a while between my posts? I am having a very busy summer, but it's mostly good stuff. I'm still working full time at Columbia River Bank, and it's been a good learning experience. After my first week, I didn't know if I could survive, but training was definitely the hardest part. Now I know how to do most everything (although when people ask for Savings Bond redemptions or to purchase foreign currency, I feel like telling them "we don't do that here"). My coworkers are all so amazingly nice, I could not possibly ask for better people to work with. The tellers are so much fun. Three of them are under 22 (including my supervisor), and the other three are over 50. They help make the slow days go by a little quicker. The guys in the loan department, and our general manager and operations officer are all such great people to work with, it's just a fantastic environment. They always refer to it as the "CRB Family" and it really is. I will actually miss these people. Although, now that cherry season is winding down, days have been very long and boring. I had a total of 30 transactions at 3:30 on Thursday. Thankfully I made it to 60 by the end of the afternoon, but it was so boring!!! Friday, however, I broke a hundred, so that was good. This week I will be covering drive through, since our usual lady will be gone, so I will probably be pretty busy!

Other than that, we are coming close to our opening night for Thoroughly Modern Millie. August 5 is just around the corner. It's a pretty fun show, with lots of good song and dance numbers. And I get to wear a full length gold sequined dress from 1930, so how could I not have fun? It is also wonderful to see old friends again after being away for a year. Of course it makes it harder to leave, which I will be doing again on August 23.

However, this year I will be living in an apartment instead of a dorm, so that will be a nice change! I'm in a double with my friend Erin Hassett, and we are just kindred spirits together, so I think we will have a blast. We'll have to make sure we actually get our homework done. :-) Oh of course we will, since we're both perfectionists when it comes to grades. You can view our awesome floor plan here (http://www.campushousing.com/ocu/html/images/floorPlans/2bed_enlarge.gif). We each get our own bathroom! I'm going to have some fun decorating up my room and bathroom, and having access to a kitchen. Maybe I can actually learn how to cook something other than chocolate cake. :-)

Other than that, I went wedding dress shopping with my girl Kelsey who is getting married next August. We were just looking around, but we found some absolutely beautiful ones. She fits beautifully into the mermaid style dresses because she is so small. Next summer will be a crazy one, but hopefully I won't be working full time so I can enjoy it a little more. :-)

So every time I see one of those bumper stickers that says, "Got hope? barackobama.com" I just laugh. But it's a painful laugh. For real, people?

Popular

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BPkf4Yb3qR8/SFXZTUiV1LI/AAAAAAAAACY/BC0XD1nfZjE/s320/n9416663_36613463_5271.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212311069704705202" />
It's all about popular.

....Think of
Celebrated heads of state or
Especially great communicators
Did they have brains or knowledge?
Don't make me laugh!

They were popular! I have been cleaning at random when I get bored, but mostly just having fun being lazy. :-) However, that is all about to change! I am now employed as a full-time teller at Columbia River Bank in The Dalles, so I will be working from 8:30-5:30 Monday through Friday (starting this coming Monday). I also am auditioning for Thoroughly Modern Millie on Saturday, so my evenings will be filled with rehearsals! However, I have had plenty of time to get rested and enjoy doing nothing, so I'm hoping I am prepared for a crazy remainder of the summer!

Opening Night!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BPkf4Yb3qR8/R_cG-bahdoI/AAAAAAAAAB8/Hrkxzzxt8sk/s320/n505357088_371585_4195.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185621165521073794" />

Tonight was our opening night performance of Shakespeare's masterpiece Twelfth Night and my college performance debut. It was a wonderful show, and the director, the Amazing Lance Marsh, congratulated me and told me that one of my "bit" moments was on his top three or four moments in the show. So that was nice! He is amazing, and we really owe it to him. Without his energy and focus, this week would have been a disaster. It has sure been one long crazy week, but so worth it in the end, as always. However, there is nothing as crazy, I think, as going to school full time and being in rehearsal 5 hours every evening. And we did it! Yay Twelfth Night cast! We rock!

New things!

So far college life has brought so many new experiences to my life. I mean, previously I'd never played mud volleyball, never raced gocarts, never been to Sonic, you know, the list goes on. But the most recent new thing I am experiencing is....the flu! Yup, I wasn't sick once all of last semester, and now it's payback time! I've never had the flu before, and I have learned that it is really not an enjoyable experience. I'm pretty sure I'll pass next time it comes around. I've been at home in bed since Sunday and, while I really wish I could go back to class, I don't feel like I have the energy yet. Too bad my crazy schedule doesn't leave room for having the flu. Anyway, the nurse ordered no class until Thursday, so I think I'll obey her for now. Yesterday I thought I'd be ready to go back earlier than that, but I think I'll take advantage of nurse's orders and try to get better. Anyway, prayers would be fantastic, as I really must be back in dance class on Thursday, or else major complications come from their attendance policy. Thanks in advance! Just remember, if you're going to get the flu, try to get it while you're at home. :-)

The week-long Monday

So today has been a little crazy. But I guess I might as well get used to it sooner or later! However, it was mostly good. Just tiring! We did our tap final this afternoon, so I'm glad that's out of the way. Now I just have to get my piano final done, and then I'll be done with finals for fall semester! :-P

However, it has been a lot of fun to see people again and hopefully I will get to know a lot more people this semester in my new classes and in the play. So for this semester, Mondays contain Music Survey, Music Theory, Wellness, voice, choir and work. Tuesdays are Aural skills, tap, jazz, choir, English diction, and work. The rest of the week follows in those footsteps. It is a lot of good stuff, though!

When I woke up yesterday morning, there were two things I noticed. First, the tree that used to reach up past the 6th floor of my dorm is now gone. That was pretty sad. There are numerous other stumps that are all that's left behind of my friends, the trees. Unfortunately, our ice storm decided that its primary purpose (besides cutting off electricity) was to kill my trees. :-( Second thing to notice was that the sky was a piercing blue!! I haven't seen blue sky since I left Oklahoma! It's nice, though. Especially when it's chilly but sunny. It's like fall. Except January. But you know, take what you can get.

Well, I'm going to get going for some much needed reading time.

You see the whole parade
From the beginning to the end
You know the route that my life will take
You know exactly where I’ve been
‘Cuz while I only see what’s goin’ by in front of me
You see the whole parade

Shakespeare!

Well, the most recent news on my end is that I have been cast in my first OCU production for next semester. I was deemed worthy to play the illustrious role of Lord #1/Girl #2. Hey, not everyone can pull that off. :-) I am quite excited! However, depending on auditions for the musicals next semester, I may be doing Urinetown instead. But in any case, I will be on the stage next semester, even if only for Twelve Seconds, which is extremely exciting!!! Plus, it's Shakespeare!

Answered prayers!

Thank you for your prayers for my audition. I hope it was a good holiday for everyone. I enjoyed myself, being lazy and comfortable down in Burleson, Texas at the Burtons' home. It was my first time in a home since August (except for when I went to President McDaniel's), and it was wonderful to be able to relax and be at home. Mrs. Burton was very adamant that we act as if their home was our home, and I obeyed whole heartedly.

It wasn't all laziness, though. We did dishes. I made Chris a chocolate pie. We made trouble. Hans, Theresa, and I helped out Mrs. Burton with rearranging the Pregnancy Aid Center that she runs. Theresa and I bought coloring books and crayons on Wednesday and did some beautiful pictures. Friday we went to a coffee shop and played Scrabble, and we also went to a park and swung on swings. Saturday we came back to Irving and did not much. We played Phase 10 a bunch of times. We went to church this morning and then here I am, back in Oklahoma City.

It's always so hard to come back to Oklahoma after spending time down in Dallas with Hans and Theresa and their friends. They have such solid relationships with each other since they've known each other for such a long time, and I can't help but wish I had the same thing right here and now. Plus Sunday evenings are always kind of lonely times, anyway, and so I haven't seen much of anyone yet.

We only have two more weeks of school and then finals, so I will, Lord willing, be heading home to Oregon in 19 days! It is going to be so very strange to come back. I really don't feel like I've been gone long at all. I am excited that I get to perform in the Madrigal Feast the day I get home! Of course, no one has sent me the music yet, so it should be exciting!! Hah.

Blessings! One more week until Advent begins!

Kelli Day

My friend Margaret officially dubbed this day "Kelli Day" because our beautiful muse, Kelli O'Hara, returned to her Alma Mater and gave us youngsters a master class. She is fantastic. In the likely event that y'all don't know who she is, Kelli graduated form OCU is 1997, I think, and has since then become an established Broadway star. She is not only a star, she is just the sweetest thing. And an unbelievably incredible coach. Just wow. Anyway, so that was the highlight of the day. We've been looking forward to it every minute since we found out on Saturday.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BPkf4Yb3qR8/RzzcTj8YJOI/AAAAAAAAABU/Er1J5Mmkct8/s320/IMG_4793.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5133219903919629538" />

My audition at school last weekend went really well! I think 75% of the good feeling about it is due to the fact that it is over!! It is so nice not to have to worry about it anymore. I am also glad that I decided to get it out of the way instead of waiting until February or March. Also, good things have happened since. I have not been officially accepted yet, but Dr. Christensen saw me at the opera after my audition and said I did a beautiful job. And my current voice teacher just told me today that Florence Birdwell (the acclaimed teacher of the aforementioned Kelli O'Hara and Kristin Chenoweth, the original Broadway Glinda in Wicked) told her to tell me that she wants me. I guess I probably shouldn't even be saying that, since nothing is offical or anything yet, but it is exciting in any case. Hey, just the fact that they remembered me is a good thing in my opinion!

I would write more, but it's dinner time. Sorry I don't ever seem to write on here. I'll write more often, perhaps. It's kind of a big deal. And rather nerve wracking. Anyway, I feel prepared on my music, but I only found out today that I need two monologues instead of one, so I'm kind of cramming those in as best I can for now. Prayers for confidence, relaxation, a quick memory, and an overall good and fun time would be much appreciated! Thanks a bunch and I'll let you know how it goes.

Halfway

Today marks the exact halfway point of my time away from home. I left August 14, it is October 14, and I will, God willing, return on December 14. It's interesting to think back. Two months is a long time. But it went by so quickly. Yet it feels like I've been here for a year. It's hard to think of two more months going by, but I when you subdivide your time and feel the smaller beats under the large ones, it's easier to get through. (sorry, I'm a music major.) I kind of live week by week. And then there are the 37 days until Thanksgiving break, which I am counting down.

Last week was midterms, although a couple of them have spilled over into tomorrow. The ones last week went very well. I'm glad they are over, especially my English comp one. But I think I did decently on everything, at least as far as I can tell. Tomorrow I have theory and group tap (solo tap was last week). I'm not too worried about either, and I am hoping they will be fun. I like both subjects quite well, and so far theory hasn't been too challenging.

Weekends are great things in college. I mean, they've always been great things, but they become even greater. I slept for 11 hours on Friday night (it was soooo wonderful). Of course, this morning, Lisa and I got up at 6:45 and went down to the river to watch our friends dance for the chapel service at 7:30. We left afterwards, came back to her dorm and napped for two hours, then went to church. It was a good nap.

Last night, though, I managed to convince Lisa to go with me (aka take me, since she has a car, and I do not) to the Regatta. I really wanted to watch some races, and it was pretty fun! We only stayed for about an hour, but amazingly, one of the four races we saw had our "friends" (aka the rowing boys) in it! It was fun.

Special thanks to everyone who has written in my Happy Book...I was looking over it yesterday and becoming exceedingly happy (mixed with homesickness, of course).

We have a choir concert tonight, so I should get something done before that.

Memories

<img style="display:block; I think. I mean, English is still as previously (ridiculous and frustrating), but all else is well. I had a wonderful Monday, which is always a good thing. After dinner, I went up to my friend Lauren's room and we (Caroline, Lisa, Ali, Lauren, and I) talked girl-talk and ate frosting (hey, that was not my idea and I only had a tiny bit). That may seem kind of typical, but it was a rare event for a week night! I usually see Lauren only on weekends, so it was exciting. After that, Lisa, Caroline, Erin, and I went to Evensong, which was a lot of fun, too. Evensong is an informal worship service every Monday night. It is a nice way to worship with a body of students and also to recenter yourself for the rest of the weekend (sometimes Monday makes us go crazy and forget what we learned Sunday morning). Oh, yeah, and I also received a care package from home yesterday as well as a birthday package from a friend at home. It was very exciting and a lot of fun. AND I got two letters. It was a great day, as you see.

I've sort of noticed something about being away from home is that I have random vivid memories of times with friends and family. They come during class, in the practice room, on my way back to Walker, anytime. But all of a sudden something will just vividly replay itself in my mind and it makes me happy. Yes, I think I've learned not to be sad when I remember things, because it is all good things usually. There are definitely techniques for dealing with homesickness. I've learned several. A cell phone is the best, though, and takes very little talent.

The exciting news of the week (and really the next two weeks) is that my dad is coming to visit me for my fall break, which is October 5-9. He's flying in on Thursday and then we'll be heading to Dallas for the weekend. Hopefully Hans can manage to find five minutes to visit with us. His schedule is probably crazier than mine. Well, homework anyway. Because it is UD after all. So I am holding out for 10 more days (only eight of which are school days) until fall break when I can hopefully sleep in for four days in a row!! I also will get to see Dad, Hans, Theresa, Chris, and all the other UD friends.

Well, I unfortunately have some reading to do for English. I also need to re-edit my paper so I can turn it in early and not have two papers due at the same time. I hope all is going well for everyone who reads this. I miss you all a lot, and I look forward to seeing lots of friends over Christmas break. December 14 is still seeming like a long way away, but it gets shorter every day. My friends will often talk about when they are next going home, and I say, "I'm going home on December 14!!!" And it's kind of sad, but okay at the same time. Several of my friends are also from far away, so they understand, but those from Oklahoma have it easy, I would say. Blessings on all!

What's up

Well, the news for the weekend....I went to a soccer game! It was a lot of fun, and the guys won, so I was happy. I was getting pretty nervous there at the end, but of course, I mean, the Stars can't let anyone get ahead. Go Stars!

In other news, and quite more exciting to me anyway, I went to Heritage Presbyterian Church in Edmond, OK on Sunday morning. I was so excited on Saturday when I realized that it was only about a 5 minute drive from the church where my friends have been worshipping these past few Sundays. So Brooke very kindly said she could take me over there, and then some other girls decided to come to the service as well. It was a wonderful service, and I really loved the church. It is a PCA church, so it reminded me so much of home. I especially got excited when the pastor baptized a baby and asked the parents the exact same questions that Pastor Bordwine asks during baptisms at Westminster. There was also a significant amount of responsive reading, which I love in church. One thing that I liked also was that they knelt during the private and public confession of sins. It was very meaningful. Anyway, it was just an exciting service and it really made me feel at home with all the wonderful hymns and creeds and traditions of the Church.

Besides that, the weekend consisted of mainly boring things like homework and going to the store and whatnot. I did spend a lot of time on the phone with various family members...actually, I think I talked to everyone but Mom, because she was at the grocery store (and that's including Hans, too--oh, and Kaleb, but he's my house elf, not a family member, but a resident apparently, since he seems to always be there when I call!).

I should go, though. I need to get some significant sleep tonight to make up for the insanity that was my Monday. Just got out of rehearsal at 9, and that was the end of the 12 hours straight of doing stuff. Sleep is a wonderful thing.

Blessings on you all!

Wednesday

So, I thought I'd just give a taste of what my regular Wednesday schedule is like.

8:00-get up (the worst part of the day, really, it only gets better from there!)
8:30-breakfast
9:00-music theory
10:00-play analysis
11:00-practice
11:15-go back to dorm and get dressed for dance
11:30-lunch
12:00-tap class
1:00-break! For the night.

Today was my first day working in the listening library/music library. It's a pretty challenging job really. I mean, I have to sit there and read a book in a perfectly quiet atmosphere. (The challenging part is staying awake, honestly.) No, sometimes someone comes in and then I have to make a little tally on a sheet to show that someone came in the door. And sometimes I can check in/out books and reshelve and other exciting things. It's the best job ever, I just decided. Except the staying awake part. Still working on that.

But I like to be busy, so that's good. And I'm proud of myself for making it through days like these. And I love what I'm doing.

Four weeks

Today marks the end of the fourth week of my current Oklahoma residency. That's kind of crazy to think about. Time always is, though. For me, it tends to go by very quickly, but very slowly at the same time. It's confusing. After I hiked up eight flights of stairs from the basement of the Bass School of Music to the third floor for my piano lesson, I walked over the huge tiled "B" on the floor in front of the elevators, and I realized I am still in a sort of awe that I am actually a student here. I still walk through the school and think, "Wow, I can't believe I have these facilities to study in." It's a great feeling.

I have a confession to make. Last night was the first time since I have been here that I felt genuinely cold outside. However, it had been a cloudy day, so when I woke up to the sun shining this morning, I figured it would be another of those 95 degree Oklahoma days that I've become so used to. But when I walked outside the door of Walker Hall, a startingly cold breeze hit me. It was such an exciting surprise! Even though I was freezing (yeah, it was probably 60, but let's not talk about that), it was really great. Today reminds me of spring in Oregon...it is cold in the shade, but the sun is warm and cozy, and they are mowing the lawns, too. Perfect, except for the cicadas seem to think it's still okay to ruin the peace with their "music". I realized, also, that the cicadas scream when it's hot, but the crickets sing when it's wet. Oh, I should point out that Southern crickets are revolting and numerous beyond what I ever imagined. Fortunately I've only encountered three cockroaches here in Oklahoma (and three in Texas, too, actually). Oh, and speaking of wildlife, I encountered an entire family of skunks last night on my way back from rehearsal. Yes, complete with baby skunks. However, they were a little too close for me to think they were cute just then.

University Singers is preparing for a big concert we are singing with the Canterbury Chorus and OCU's Chamber Choir on the 22nd of September. Our literature is really great, especially the "Dona Nobis Pacem" by Vaughan Williams, which is the entire second half of our concert. It is an incredibly challenging piece, but it's so much fun to sing once you get all the chromatics and dissonances down. Unfortunately, our concert is at the same time as the OCU performance of Little Women, so we will be missing a good chunk of our choir. (On a side note, I am so excited to see Little Women!!)

I should be going. I have homework and laundry to do before dinner, and then the Kappa Phi (the Christian sorority) meeting this evening. Thank you for your prayers and notes!

~ Sonja

A New Creation

Not that I'll have time, but I decided to create a blog for a way to try to keep in touch with people back at home who might wonder what I've been up to.
